THE HISTORY OF NEWMEADOW SAratogA SCHOOL
Begun in 1982, with sister schools consolidated, Newmeadow Inc., generally known as Newmeadow Saratoga School, has provided special education services to over three thousand preschool children. Staff includes certified and licensed professionals in special education, speech therapy, occupational and physical therapy, psychology services, social work, and nursing. Homebased special education itinerant services and related services are also provided.
The school works with a wide range of special needs, autism being the largest single category. The BRIDGES program for children with autism at Newmeadow was established as the first in the New York State capital region to use applied behavior analysis. Results with the children have been and continue to be impressive. About one-third to one-half of Newmeadow’s 140 children each year have autism spectrum disorder.
Newmeadow led the way in developing a nursery school within its school to provide a true integrated setting. Demand for the nursery school as well as the special programs exceed capacity at most times in the year.
Newmeadow’s four hour program allows the time for a preschooler in a centerbased school to get the services required and still participate in a program to develop kindergarten readiness.
